The important things in life

At a philosophy class a professor picked up a large empty glass jar and filled it with big rocks. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They __said__ that it was. So the professor poured a box of pebbles into the jar and shook it lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students again considered the jar to be full. When the professor poured a box of sand into the jar it filled up the __remaining__ open areas of the jar, which was really full at last.

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to understand that this jar __represents__ your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, health, children – and if only they are present in your life, it will __still__ be full. The pebbles are the other things that __matter__ – like your job, house, car. The sand is the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for anything important. __Pay__ attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children, do sports, meet friends. There will always be time to work, clean the house, or fix the car. Take care __of__ the rocks first, set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”
